Competition Dancing
in Second Life

CDSL Competitor Guide

DRAFT

NOT for release

CDSL Competitor Guide

Competition Dancing in Second Life (“CDSL”) was created by 2LDance.org and SavoyBallroom.org creative teams.  CDSL is modelled after Real Life competition dancing but in a virtual world setting.  The excitement of competing with and among other dancers is the essence of Competitive Dancing in both Real Life and Second Life.

CDSL dancers compete together as couples or as individuals (volunteer partners are available.)  The goal is to appear as realistic and as creative as possible.  Competitions have a three judge panel assessing three performance categories:
DANCES - appropriate dances selected for each musical segment   (type, tempo & style)
TRANSITIONS - smooth transitions between dances (at animation loop points)
PERFORMANCE - visual presentation of both dancers before, during, and after they perform.  This includes the decorum of entry and exit.  Costumes are also assessed.

OPEN ROUND
In the open dancing competition, all dancers compete to reach the Final Five Finale.  Dancers will compete by moving to the center of the dance floor when scheduled, and dancing through a Competition Track that is 3 minutes long.  The track has five 29-second musical segments, followed by 30 seconds to change dancers.
CDSL Scoring  (100 max)
Each judge assigns a point score in three performance categories as shown below.  The three judges scores are averaged together to provide the final open round competition score.   The maximum total points possible is 100.
Points
0-40    Dance selection
8 points for each of five music segments
0-3    Type        Dance moves fit the music
0-3    Tempo    Speed of dance and music comparable
0-2    Style        Personality shown across all five segments

0-20    Smooth transition between animations
    5 transitions including to handhold
        0 = rough transition
        2 = fair transition
        4 = smooth transition

0-20    Entry and Exit Demeanor
      0-10  Dancers walk on together and Lead positions dancers
                Should be in the center holding hands facing the judges.
      0-10 After the 5th segment, resume holding hands until dismissed by judges.
                0 Multiple errors or transition jumps
                5 Average, fairly smooth transitions
              10  Perfect, smooth transitions and walk off

0-20    Costume effectiveness
    0-10     Lead costume
    0-10    Follow costume
        0    No effort made to match
        2    Some basics
        4    Colors and styles match, street clothes
        6    Nicely matched, recognizable theme, costumed
        8    Extremely well done, well matched. (Usually this is top awarded)
        10    Exceptional - Best in class - ornate - impeccably matched
Some competitions award points earned for costumes selected through open voting of those present using a contest board.  House rules usually allow 10 points in this category to be awarded from those results.
Costume Decorum:  no nudity is allowed.  Keep all bits covered.  Costumes help set the theme and style of a dance couple.  Costumes can visually blend two dancers together.  Be mindful of scripts which will lag your performance and the experience of others.

From DanceSport: “What sorts of things do judges look for? Posture, correct musical timing, pleasing lines, musicality and expression, appropriate characterization, and overall performance are elements crucial to judging any form of dance.”

MEDAL ROUND
The top five dancers in points are invited back for the Medal Round.  Each couple will perform another 3 minute Competition Track, in reverse order.  (The highest point scorer goes last.)   These performances are judged the same way, except the point scores result in five award levels:  Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze medals

Ideas For Getting Started
1. Go a CDSL Dance Competition as a spectator and observe how it works. Talk with the competitors and ask them questions.
2. Practice at any CDSL Dance Competition, and at CDSL sanctioned classes, presentations and events.
